Gameplay features aside, Fallout 4 is continuing Bethesda’s tradition of putting players in nuked-out versions of the most iconic American cities, such as Washington D.C., Las Vegas, and now Boston. And while the public has only officially been aware of the game’s existence since June, it’s incredibly interesting to know that the upcoming sequel has been in development for so long that Bethesda had already decided upon Fallout 4’s Boston location even before launching Skyrim.
When speaking to GameSpot during this year’s QuakeCon, Bethesda’s Vice President of Marketing and PR Pete Hines made it clear that the game studio had begun pre-production planning for Fallout 4 almost immediately after Fallout 3 had been released. Regarding the matter, Hines says:
However, Hines goes on to confirm that Fallout 4 hadn’t gone into a legitimate development phase until Bethesda had maintained Skyrim for several years. All of the nuclear doomsday-themed title’s nascent stages of notes, sketches, and scribbles weren’t truly being worked on until the studio had decided everything that could be done with Skyrim was completed. To be specific, Hines says, “The point at which it really kicked into development whenever it was when we put up the post that said, ‘Hey, we’re done with Skyrim and moving onto the next project.’ Once we were done with all of that, it was like, ‘Alright, now it’s Fallout 4 full-throttle.’”
In addition to Hines’ revelations regarding the game’s Boston setting, Bethesda also divulged fresh information about Fallout 4’s romance, perk, and companion details at QuakeCon. Not to mention, for franchise diehards and gaming fans who may have never delved into the series, Hines announced the forthcoming release of Fallout Anthology – a limited edition, PC-exclusive collection including every licensed Fallout release and all of the official DLC intact. Moreover, not only will players get five full games in the set, but they will also get a collectible replica Mini-Nuke in which to store them.
At any rate, while the hype for Fallout 4 may be highly elaborate, it’s certainly far from overblown. And honestly, with Bethesda’s track record setting a high benchmark for quality, once Fallout 4 releases, gamers will surely be exploring the virtual Wasteland for many moons to come.
Fallout 4 is set for release on November 10, 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
