Although PC gamers have developed a reputation for savvy online purchases that are characterized by discounts and Steam sales, SuperData’s founder and CEO Joost van Dreunen believes Fallout 4 illustrates that certain games can buck that trend. Dreunen suggested that PC gamer’s don’t “exclusively purchase games at a huge discount” and that they are “willing to shell out full price for select titles”. That Fallout 4 has shipped 12 million copies globally in addition to its digital figures is evidence of that fact.

It’s not as though Bethesda chose a soft release schedule to ensure Fallout 4’s domination of the video game market, either. Despite releasing around the same time as other AAA titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, it was Fallout 4 who dominated sales in the UK, US, and other countries. Clearly, it’s Bethesda’s grim, gallows humor-filled world, and we’re all just living in it.

That world isn’t all irradiated sunshine and laser-produced rainbows, however. The fact remains that Fallout 4 is a polarizing title that isn’t necessarily for everyone, featuring many gameplay elements that recall old-school PC RPGs that might turn some gamers off. On top of that, the game showcases Bethesda’s penchant for designing and releasing games riddled with bugs that range from amusing to exasperating - one Fallout 4 bug in particular is game-breaking and could result in a number of broken keyboards and controllers.

Debilitating glitches or no, Fallout 4 is still the de facto top dog in sales this week and likely for the foreseeable future. Bethesda’s Todd Howard, the director behind the wildly successful release, already confirmed plans for Fallout 4 DLC releases well into 2016, and it appears the hype train has settled in the Boston Wasteland for an extended stay.
